Room with a view

View from our campsite in Victoria Victoria is at the southern end of Vancouver Island, in BC. On the ferry over we met a friendly couple that used to live in Victoria and they recommended that we stay at this RV & Marina Park right smack in the middle of town. Our RV is about 6 ft. from the shore and we look over the bay at the downtown area. Pretty cool site in a pretty cool city!

We see float planes take off and land on the bay and when the tide goes out, there’s lots of birds fishing on the exposed shore line that don’t mind posing for Dave. The only problem with the planes is that they begin taking off and landing at 7:00am sharp – with the landing pathway right over our RV! It’s better than an alram clock…

The first night we were here, we ventured out to get some groceries after we got settled. Next door to the store was a big rec center that had a curling club, so we stopped in to see how it’s played. Unfortunately, it’s a winter sport and the ice was gone to make room for lacrosse. We stayed to watch a quarter – cheap entertainment! I didn’t realize that lacrosse was a game invented by Native Americans hundreds of years ago. It appeared to be fast paced and pretty rough, but fun to watch.

Today we found a small, quiet lake 15 miles outside the city – similar to Lake Hope in Southern Ohio – surrounded by tall pines, cool blue skies, and a shy bald eagle who only flew close when Dave put his new long lens away. Although we’ve been told that eagles are “a dime a dozen” up here – we were thrilled to see our first one!

Tomorrow we head North to the middle of the island to one of Canada’s top National Parks – called the Pacific Rim. Everyone has been telling us how temperate the climate is here in Victoria (today was 75 with a brillant blue sky). Dave looked up the predictions for where we are headed and we’re back to barely making it to 50 with clouds, rain and wind. I guess the scenery is spectacular, so we’ll just add some layers and turn the electric heater up on high!
