Thank goodness we finally left Seward – now we can finally catch up on our bloging! We managed to get a front row camping spot on the Seward beach so we’ve been continually entertained by sea otters floating by, fishing boats madly dashing out to sea at 7:00 am, gulls circling the returning boats for fish scraps in the afternoon and eagles soaring overhead all day long.
Seward has created a park all along the coast that includes the city campground, a well used walking path with a sophisticated play fort for the kiddies at one end and the marina at the other. We could always people watch and chat with fellow campers when the critters and boats weren’t available for entertainment.
As the main access point to Kenai Fjord National Park and 2 1/2 hours from Anchorage, Seward is a hopping little town. Many of the tour companies offered twofers through our Alaskan Tour Saver book and we took advantage of a few of them.
We joined Michael, our guide, on a 4 hour kayak paddle along Resurrection Bay and a hike to the Bridal Veil glacier-fed waterfall. Since we were the only nuts willing to head out at 7:00 pm into a stiff breeze on rather rough waters, we had Mike’s undivided attention. (We gave him a good laugh with our kayaking non-skills as we began our excursion.) We were escorted by a Doll Porpoise for a while – which was pretty exciting. We also watched two eagles work together in the air to corner and then grab a Raven for dinner. It was a fun experience for which we paid in sore muscles the next day.
Our boat tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park was the real highlight, but that’s for another post…
