We have been continually amazed at the impact of tides here in Alaska. Although not consistent, the fluctuation of high and low tide can be as great as 25 feet! Dave demonstrated this phenomenon with his photos of our Ketchikan campsite – we set up camp at low tide, took off for 5 hours and came back to find the sea about 5 – 6 feet from our RV!
Dave was thrilled to pick up a free booklet that lists all the tides, times and depth, for Alaska. He carries it in his shirt pocket because, as he’ll tell you, it has all kinds of nifty information – like when you can catch the biggest fish in a month, moon cycles, and much more. In fact, I’m surprised that he hasn’t added this information to our calendar page…
Our first day here in Petersburg, we discovered a small park with a 1/2 mile board walk to a beautiful area called Blind Rapids. It was a georgous spot, but we were puzzeled over the name – where were the rapids??? Unknowingly, we visited the rapids at high tide – and it was under water. I have returned twice to paint here, once at high tide (12:45pm) and once at low (7:15am). It’s quite eerie to hear the rapids behind me for an hour or so into a painting, and then to slowly realize it’s become totally silent!
Hi Suzi,
Wowo,how exciting and gorgeous!!
So, Are you traveling with the camper? You “drove” to Alaska?
Donna
Yep! We plan on touring Alaska and the Northern Provinces for a total of 5 months – with 3 to go!!! Boy, are we lucky and having a blast! We’ve found that our internet is very sporadic and I tend to load pics, paintings and stories in large groups – like this am!
