Whale of a Tour

Humpback Whale Kicking Up Tail Each time Susi suggests another tour, she silently accepts my quiet grumbles. “What? Another boat ride?” I’m just glad she’s gracious enough to never say, “I told you so,” because our Kenai Fjords Tour was such a magnificent day that we had to upload two albums of pix and videos titled 07-14 Kenai Fjords Wildlife and 07-14 Seward & Kenai Fjords at right.

Calm Pacific Ocean We enjoyed six hours in Resurrection Bay and a bit of the North Pacific Ocean where, by rights, it should have been stormy and rough. Instead, we were blessed with incredibly calm seas that facilitated up close views of birds, sea animals, glaciers and beautiful vistas.

The ship captain was a wonderful guide who brought us a detailed understanding of the wildlife ecology and behaviors in such a quiet and gentle voice he almost seemed to be calming the critters into posing for us.

Check out Susi’s videos below. The first one captures the dives of Humpback whales and a bit of the captain’s voice. The views in the second video are most fitting for an ocean whose name means peaceful.

Wow!!!! We went to Alaska last summer and we definitely want to go back again!!
At Denali we saw the big 5—moose, bear, wolf, caribou and Dall sheep, but we never saw a whale on our journey. Next time for sure!!! I’m going to make Ken take a Whale-watching cruise just so we can see one!!!
All your pictures are beautiful and I’m so glad Ken put me in touch with your web site!!

      Hi Sue,

Alaska is a fantastic place to visit – you can’t help get great pics when you have such fantastic scenery! The best way to see marine life is by using the Alaskan Marine Highway on the Inside Passage. We loved island hopping on the ferries – we could stay 3-5 days at each stop and was a lot cheaper than a cruise!

If you are serious about heading to the North country, I would recommend that you purchase online the Great Alaskan Tour Saver, http://www.toursaver.com, the fall before your summer departure. All of our glacier & wildlife cruises were 1/2 off thanks to the book. In fact, the $$ we spent on the book was earned on the first tour we did in Ketchikan. In addition to many other savings, it encouraged us to do things we probably wouldn’t have thought of doing – such as the fun Riverboat Cruise in Fairbanks.
