{"id":809,"date":"2009-08-02T10:56:23","date_gmt":"2009-08-02T16:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bezaires.com\/blog\/?p=809"},"modified":"2012-01-29T22:09:55","modified_gmt":"2012-01-30T05:09:55","slug":"the-glenn-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bezaires.com\/blog\/post-id\/809","title":{"rendered":"The Glenn Highway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"oy tt-flickr tt-flickr tt-flickr-Thumbnail\" title=\"Wrangel-St. Ellias National Park\" href=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2599\/3777456912_62005378b4_z.jpg?zz=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2599\/3777456912_62005378b4_t.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Wrangel-St. Ellias National Park\" width=\"100\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a> All the main roads in Alaska have names as well as numbers but the names are what everyone uses when referring to a route &#8211; we have traveled the Alaskan, the Top of the World, the Parks, the Edgerton and the Nabestha in Wrangell-St. Elias NP, the Haines, the Klondike Loop, the Richardson, the Seward, the Sterling, the Glenn and are now on the Tok Cutoff.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"oy tt-flickr tt-flickr tt-flickr-Thumbnail\" title=\"Smoky Day at Porter Valley\" href=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3513\/3727432016_a0db5d2748_z.jpg?zz=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3513\/3727432016_a0db5d2748_t.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Smoky Day at Porter Valley\" width=\"100\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a> Out of all of them, the Glenn highway was the most beautiful, while we were traveling on it. I put that caveat because much of our journey to and from the Kenai along the Turnagain Arm was on smoke or foggy days &#8211; and a sunny day might have made a big difference in what we saw.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"oy tt-flickr tt-flickr tt-flickr-Thumbnail\" title=\"Flowers Near Sheep Mountain\" href=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2568\/3774526788_c430816885_z.jpg?zz=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2568\/3774526788_c430816885_t.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Flowers Near Sheep Mountain\" width=\"100\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a> <a class=\"oy tt-flickr tt-flickr tt-flickr-Thumbnail\" title=\"Sheep Mountain on the Glenn Highway\" href=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2470\/3760328763_487d8292bf_z.jpg?zz=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2470\/3760328763_487d8292bf_t.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Sheep Mountain on the Glenn Highway\" width=\"100\" height=\"78\" \/><\/a> It was also the road less traveled, so we could poke along at 45 mph checking out the views and not bother travelers more intent on their destination. We even stopped at rest area near sheep mountain so I could paint the wonderful colors of the rocks. Heading to Glennallen from Anchorage, we had the Chugach Mountains to the south and the huge Wrangell-St. Elais Mountains growing larger as we got closer to the National Park.
